“One-third of all humanity was killed by these three plagues—by the fire and the smoke and the sulfur that came from their mouths.”
— Revelation 9:18 (TPT)
Have you ever paused at this passage in Revelation and asked, Lord, what does this really mean? The Spirit recently revealed something that stirred my soul—and I believe it’s a message for the Body of Christ today.
This verse, often read with fear and confusion, actually contains a deep and prophetic truth about what it means to be an awakened believer in the end times.
🛡 The Breastplates of Fire, Sapphire, and Sulfur
In Revelation 9:17, the warriors—the riders of the horses—are described as wearing breastplates of fire, sapphire (or hyacinth), and sulfur. These aren’t random images; they carry prophetic meaning for those of us who walk in the Spirit today.
🔥 Fire represents holy passion—a heart consumed with zeal for the Lord and righteousness.
💎 Sapphire/Hyacinth speaks of royalty and authority, reminding us that we are seated in heavenly places with Christ.
🕊 Sulfur, translated from the Greek word theiodes, comes from theios, meaning divine or godlike—a reflection of the nature of Christ Himself.
These breastplates clothe the remnant rising—those awakened and set apart, walking in authority, clothed in purity, and reflecting Jesus not just in word, but in character and Spirit-led action.
💨 The Fire, the Smoke, and the Sulfur from Their Mouths
Then the vision shifts. From the mouths of these lion-headed horses come fire, smoke, and sulfur—and we’re told a third of humanity is killed by them.
But the Spirit revealed this isn’t a picture of physical death. It’s the death of the flesh—the carnal, sinful nature within the hearts of people.
These are Spirit-breathed, God-authored words being released by the faithful. Words that burn like fire, cloud deception like smoke, and reflect divine truth like sulfur. These are the words of awakened believers whose voices carry weight in Heaven—and on earth.
They confront sin, cut through compromise, and call the lost into life. These are the kinds of words Jesus spoke—and now He speaks again, through His Body.
🦁 The Horses: Overcomers in Christ
The horses with lion’s heads represent overcoming believers—those who ride with courage, speak with holy boldness, and walk not according to religion, but according to the Spirit of God.
They breathe out words that break chains.
They speak truth that doesn’t flatter the flesh, but kills it—so that true life can begin.
They don’t speak from emotion or intellect, but from the mouth of the Spirit within them. They are clothed in divine character, and their lives burn brightly in a dark world.
🌾 This is the Revival We’ve Been Waiting For
This is not the “revival” of lights and music alone. This is the revival that begins with the death of the flesh—and the resurrection of the Spirit within us. It begins when we allow the fire of God to consume compromise, when we let His smoke cloud the lies, and when His sulfur—His divine nature—transforms us.
Friend, if you’ve been crying out for more… this is the more.
It’s not about doing more.
It’s about becoming more—like Jesus.
🙏 A Closing Prayer
Lord, awaken me.
Burn away the flesh with Your fire.
Fill my lungs with Your breath.
Clothe me in Your divine nature.
Teach me to speak with holy boldness—
to walk in royal authority—
and to reflect the godlike character of Christ in all I do.
May I be counted among those who ride with You—
those who breathe fire,
not in anger,
but in Truth that sets the captives free.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
