From Barren to Blooming: A Garden Story of Hope

This week, I was reminded once again of the mystery and beauty tucked inside a seed — not just in the garden, but in our lives too.

There’s a section of our yard where, year after year, sunflowers and hollyhocks bloomed in radiant color. But this year, not a single flower grew. Nothing. The soil looked tired, and honestly, I thought that space was dead.

I brought my question to Facebook, asking fellow gardeners what to do with soil that seemed to give up. And wouldn’t you know — God used that moment to begin something new.

With wisdom from others and peace in our hearts, my husband and I went to the store, bought new soil, dug deep into the dry ground, and planted seeds — old seeds, ones I wasn’t even sure would take root. Beans, zucchini, tomatoes, peas, peppers… all tucked gently into freshly stirred earth.

And already, we’re seeing life push through.

God reminded me of something powerful in that quiet act: sometimes the places that seem barren are only waiting for His timing and our obedience. What looks dead to us is not too far gone for resurrection. He is the One who brings beauty from ashes and fruit from forgotten places.

There’s mystery in a seed. Inside that small shell is a whole destiny, just waiting for the right soil, the right season, and the hand of the Creator to call it forth.

This garden is more than food for our table — it’s food for my soul. It’s a holy whisper that nothing is wasted in God’s hands, and even when we can’t see it, He’s always working, always restoring.

So here’s to the gardens that look like graves… and to the God who turns them into glory.

With hope and dirty hands,

Karen
